Many industrial and municipal waste treatment plants were constructed in the 1970s and 1980s. Discharge criteria required the installation of facilities that performed what is now called primary treatment of wastewater. As subsequent discharge criteria were tightened, secondary treatment became necessary. Facilities and their designers are now considering and installing tertiary treatment systems to comply with the latest regulatory and permitting parameters.

Facilities include drilling rigs, mining operations, petroleum refineries, shipping terminals, pipelines, and airports are now responsible for the remediation of groundwater and soil at their sites that are contaminated by petroleum hydrocarbons.

The landscape and agricultural irrigation markets make up the largest shares of total water reuse and are faced with continuing challenges in removing potentially harmful pollutants and pathogens.

These combined markets present a $21 billion opportunity in the US alone in 2007 that is growing by over 7% per year and is expected to reach $29 billion in 2012.
